Nathan Alexander Pape is a musician, mathematician, acoustician, and educator who, after spending most of the last decade in Brooklyn, NY, is currently residing just outside of Tulsa, OK―surrounded by oak trees and a host of wildlife. His solo practice focuses on the sonic expansion of the steel-string acoustic guitar through improvisation, generative strategies, and minimalist structures/processes.

"coat after coat" is a documentation of Nathan’s development of a musical language involving the interaction between acoustic guitar and amplifiers. Sonic details bloom into an array of shaded tones and amplified investigations. Each piece on "coat after coat" moves at its own speed, always with intention. Whether bending fingerstyle-rapidity into obtuse angles or letting notes crack and swell into feedback walls, Pape allows each pattern to guide each successive step. Discordant shards are sandpaper to the metallic resonance in one moment, an emotive cradle in the next. "coat after coat" explores the margins of mangled soundworlds to find the edges and dissect their boundaries.

His previous releases include Ground Air with Patrick Breiner on Astral Editions, Joys of All Barriers with Shawn E Hansen on Peyote Tapes, as well as solo works STUDIES and this point of view produced a dozen or more stories on Singleton Set Records. Nathan also makes up half of the experimental duo Country Wifi along with Brad Rose.
